Skutt Kiln Features Fast Firing- These kilns are at their best in situations where fast firing is required, particularly in the Ceramic Café/Paint-a-Pot market where a quick turnaround is required. The six side bungs can be removed after firing to increase the rate of cooling. Top Temperatures- All models are rated to cone 10 except the KM714 which is cone 5, if you want more information on heatwork and understanding pyrometric cones please ask for a copy of our Guide to Firing. The elements, bricks and other components are rated to 1300°C (cone 10). Soaking, (i.e. holding the top temperature) will increase heatwork; care should be taken that prolonged soaking at higher temperatures could exceed specification and cause damage to the kiln. If in doubt please call us. Modular Construction- Skutt kilns are built in a modular construction of three rings. Where access is difficult it is possible to take the rings apart and detach the lid. This should always be done by a competent person with advice from Cromartie as electrical connections are involved. Economy- The Skutt takes advantage of the economies of scale in the large American market where the majority of ceramic cafes use this kiln. The price of the kiln is surprisingly low and extremely competitive for a kiln of this quality. Firing costs are also kept down by efficient ratio of heating elements to insulation making this an extremely economical kiln for busy enterprises. We anticipate a firing cost of around £3.60 for a low temperature earthenware firing for example Duncan and Gare glazes. Lid Lifter
All our Skutt kilns except the smallest where weight is not a problem have the Lid Lifter system. Lid Lifter is a spring assisted device that takes the weight out of the lid allowing you to open it with one finger. Lid Coating- Lids are coated with long lasting refractory coating that prevents brick dust from falling onto ware in the kiln and improves the lid’s structural integrity. Lid Locking- There is provision for a padlock (not supplied) to be fitted to the stay arm securing the lid during firing. Bricks- Only premium hand selected low thermal mass bricks are used to ensure the best insulation. Captive Key Interlock- The Interlock switches off power to the elements when the lid is opened. This feature is Cromartie’s specification and complies with EU safety legislation which has more stringent demands than the Us equivalent. Thermocouple- Skutt kilns are fitted with K type thermocouples, a spare thermocouple is provided with the kiln. If required further replacements are available through Cromartie, remember to specify “K” type when ordering. Stand- The kiln stands are designed for stability, they are welded so no assembly is need and maximum strength is achieved. KilnMaster ControllerSkutt kilns come with the KilnMaster program controller, a user friendly instrument that has a simple cone firing mode for very easy firing and also user-settable programs each with 8 segments for more complex firing profiles.
. This controller can handle the whole firing spectrum from straightforward firing in Paint A Pot studios to glass slumping and fusing. Safety features are also standard with a backup of diagnostics and error messages to protect the kiln and alert you to any problems. The Kiln Master is mounted on the angled Easy View touch pad mount for easier viewing and programming. Controller features: - Digital Display in °C or °F
- Delay Start
- Pre-heat facility
- Alarm Options
- Cone Firing Mode
- Slow, Medium or Fast firing speed in cone mode.
- Cone Table
- 6 Programs, each program has 8 Segments, each segment has Ramp, Temperature & Soak facility.
- Program memory.
