To All Users of Hobby Casting Slip26 Sep 2007
TO ALL USERS OF HOBBY CERAMIC CASTING SLIPS There has recently been some discussion in the Hobby Ceramics industry about the safety of casting slips; specifically that they are suspected of containing asbestos. There has been confusion going back thirty years because of inadequate analytical techniques and mineralogical understanding. This is fully explained by the producers of the talc, R T Vanderbilt of Connecticut USA, major supplier to this industry. Cromartie supply Ex-Cel slip which is made with talc supplied by R. T. Vanderbilt; if you visit their website: www.rtvanderbilt.com you will see that Vanderbilt states clearly that there is no asbestos in their talc and neither has their talc been shown to pose an asbestos-like health risk. No regulatory authority considers any of the components in Vanderbilt’s talc to be asbestos. Visit their website: www.rtvanderbilt.com and click the following:
If you would like a printout of the relevant section or any further information please ask. While we cannot comment on slips supplied by other companies, at Cromartie we are reassured by our suppliers and by their suppliers in turn that Ex-Cel slip is free from asbestos and remains the casting slip of choice for the hobby ceramics industry.
